The best startup chair is the one that fits your patients, your delivery style, your utilities and your service network, not a single brand. In 2026, compare published specs: patient load ratings range from 450 to 500 lb among the models below (Pelton & Crane; A-dec). Also compare low height, warranty, local service and lead time.

Patterson's design checklist asks you to choose rear, side or over-the-patient delivery early, because it shapes the room (Patterson Dental). To test delivery styles and chair positions on your own floor plan, the free dream-practice builder (coming soon) is planned for this step.

Specs below come from each manufacturer's own published materials; check current versions before you buy. This isn't a ranking.

The takeaway: utility requirements differ by brand. Axano's water range tops out at 87 psi, while Planmeca's goes to 130 psi. Pick the chair before the plumber roughs in. See dental chair utility requirements.

Does the chair affect the compressor and vacuum?

Yes. Each chair's air demand and each high-volume evacuator add load. A-dec's 511 guide calls for at least 2.5 scfm of air per chair during normal use, with 7.5 scfm peak intermittent flow (A-dec), and Midmark counts each HVE as one vacuum user (Midmark). To size for your chairs, the free compressor & vacuum sizing calculator (coming soon) is planned for this step; confirm with the manufacturer. See compressor and vacuum sizing.

What about accessibility?

The DOJ's guidance on accessible medical care says an accessible exam table should lower to about 17–19 inches from the floor, roughly wheelchair seat height (U.S. DOJ). It doesn't set a dental chair rule, but low base height and swing-away armrests help transfers. Pelton & Crane markets the Spirit 3300's lower minimum height and wider toeboard for easier entry and exit (Pelton & Crane).

Should a startup buy new or used chairs?

New chairs carry the full warranty; A-dec's 10-year chair warranty applies to new chairs bought from A-dec or an authorized dealer (A-dec). Used chairs cost less but may lack warranty, parts or compatible connectivity. Either way, record make, model, serial and warranty dates. The free equipment inventory & appraisal report (coming soon) is planned to track this. Connected chairs also need network planning; Dentsply Sirona requires separate Ethernet connections for the treatment center and PC (Dentsply Sirona).

How FloorStack helps

FloorStack is a dental build-out platform that links your chair choice to its utility template, operatory layout and mechanical sizing. Start at the Dental Equipment Planning hub, and see the startup equipment budget and operatory equipment checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important spec when choosing a dental chair?

For a startup, utility requirements and local service matter as much as comfort, because they lock in your rough-in and uptime.

How much weight can a dental chair hold?

It varies by model. Published ratings include 500 lb for the A-dec 500 and 450 lb for the Pelton & Crane Spirit 3300.

How long do dental chairs last?

A-dec says its chairs are designed and tested for a 20-year service life under normal use with proper maintenance.

Do different dental chairs need different plumbing?

Yes. Water and air pressure ranges and floor requirements differ by brand, so choose the chair before rough-in.

How long does it take to get a dental chair?

Lead times of 14–24 weeks from order to installation have been reported for chairs and delivery units.

What chair height helps patients who use wheelchairs?

DOJ guidance for exam tables suggests lowering to about 17–19 inches. Ask each manufacturer for the lowest seat height.
