Usually yes, or at least a dedicated alcove planned with a shielding expert. Most 2026 CBCT units need a dedicated electrical circuit, a network drop and a shielding design. Dentsply Sirona makes a radiation physicist's shielding plan mandatory for every 3D install and says a typical review costs $300–$500 (Dentsply Sirona). Plan it before framing.
Which guide you need: this page helps you decide whether you need a dedicated room and how to plan it. For the installer's site-prep spec, see pano and CBCT site prep. For whether the walls need lead, see x-ray shielding in dental offices. For workstation, network and PMS fit, see CBCT compatibility.

| Network (Dentsply Sirona) | 1 Gigabit required | Dentsply Sirona |
| Space (Carestream CS 8100 3D) | 1,200 × 1,400 × 2,400 mm; 2,000 mm wide with ceph | Carestream |
| Door / floor (CS 8100 3D) | 75 cm (30 in) door; floor rated 500 kg/m² | Carestream |
| Imaging suite construction | $40K–$120K added | BuildCrux |
Does a CBCT need its own room?
Not always a full room, but it needs a defined, shielded location. Whether existing walls are enough depends on the unit, workload and who sits on the other side of the wall. Dentsply Sirona's site survey explains that a shielding design applies the unit's known emissions to your office; depending on image volume and nearby occupancy, extra shielding may not be required (Dentsply Sirona). States differ on review: North Carolina requires an acknowledged plan before installation (NC DHHS), while Washington does not review dental shielding plans, including CBCT (Washington DOH).
To lay out the imaging room on your own suite, the free dream-practice builder (coming soon) is planned for sketching rooms and layouts.
How big does the room need to be?
Use the manufacturer's install guide for your model. Carestream's CS 8100 3D guide, for example, lists (Carestream):
| Requirement | CS 8100 3D |
|---|---|
| Required space (no ceph) | 1,200 mm L × 1,400 mm D × 2,400 mm H |
| Required space (with ceph) | 2,000 mm L × 1,400 mm D × 2,400 mm H |
| Door width | 75 cm (30 in) |
| Floor capacity | 500 kg/m² |
| Room temperature | 10–35 °C |
Add room for wheelchair approach and for the operator's protected position. North Carolina's guidance says the exposure switch must be in a protected area where the operator stays for the whole exposure (NC DHHS).
What power does a CBCT need?
A dedicated circuit, installed before delivery. Dentsply Sirona requires a 200–240 V, 20 A dedicated circuit, hardwired rather than plugged, for its pan, ceph and 3D systems, plus 110 V for the media converter and conduit for the remote control and network cable; electrical work must be done before installation day (Dentsply Sirona). Carestream strongly recommends a separate dedicated line protected by a 30 mA differential breaker (Carestream).
What network and IT does a CBCT need?
Dentsply Sirona's checklist asks for a 1 Gigabit network, at least 500 GB of free image storage (1 TB recommended), a working backup, and that your IT person be told the port and networking requirements (Dentsply Sirona). Carestream's guide shows a minimum Cat 5e Ethernet outlet at the unit (Carestream).
To draft the switch, cabling and storage plan around the CBCT, the free network & IT plan generator (coming soon) is planned for this step. Before you buy, confirm the unit works with your imaging and practice management software; the free device compatibility checker (coming soon) is planned for that. See dental office network design.
What approvals does the room need?
| Step | Example rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shielding plan review | NC: submit 1–6 months before install; about 30 business days; no install until acknowledged | NC DHHS |
| Upgrade pano to pan/CT | NC: requires a new plan review | NC DHHS |
| Registration | TX: within 30 days after beginning use | 25 TAC §289.232 |
| Registration | CA: within 30 days of acquisition | 17 CCR 30110 |
To track the plan review, registration and post-install survey with the rest of your sign-offs, the free permit & inspection tracker (coming soon) is planned for this step. For the shielding rules in depth, see x-ray shielding in dental offices.
What does an imaging room cost?
BuildCrux estimates an imaging suite adds $40,000–$120,000 in construction, driven by shielding, dedicated electrical and structural work (BuildCrux). The unit itself is separate; see the startup dental equipment budget.
What should you collect before ordering the CBCT?
Before the purchase order is signed, gather the documents that the rest of the build-out depends on. Ask the vendor for the current site-preparation guide for the exact model and configuration you are buying, not a brochure. Confirm the footprint, door width, power and network requirements from that guide, then give it to your architect, electrician and IT vendor. Ask who will order and coordinate the shielding review, and confirm what your state requires before the unit is used on patients. Finally, record the serial number, the software license holder and the support contract in your equipment inventory when the unit is delivered, so ownership and service history are clear later.
Which free tools help with this?
FloorStack Studio (live, free plan) places every device on your floor plan and gives you a device schedule with rooms, ports and cable lengths (FloorStack FAQ).
How FloorStack helps
FloorStack is a dental build-out platform that puts the CBCT's footprint, circuit, network drop and shielding notes on the same plan, so the electrician, IT vendor and physicist work from one source. Start at the Dental Equipment Planning hub, and see the endodontic office layout for limited-field CBCT and the dental office equipment list.

Frequently asked questions
Does a CBCT need a separate room?
It needs a defined, shielded location designed by a qualified expert. Many practices use a dedicated room or alcove.
Does a CBCT room need lead?
Not always. A shielding design decides based on the unit, workload and adjacent occupancy; sometimes standard walls are enough.
How much does a CBCT shielding plan cost?
Dentsply Sirona says a typical radiation plan review costs $300–$500.
What electrical does a CBCT need?
Typically a dedicated circuit. Dentsply Sirona requires 200–240 V, 20 A, hardwired.
What internet or network speed does a CBCT need?
Dentsply Sirona requires a 1 Gigabit local network, plus ample image storage and backup.
Do I need a new review if I upgrade my pano to a CBCT?
In North Carolina, yes. Upgrading a panoramic unit to pan/CT requires a new shielding plan review.
