Only your PMS vendor's published support list can answer that, and the answer depends on the exact sensor model, the software version and the driver. In 2026, Patterson lists integrated intraoral sensors from 7 brands for Eaglesoft 24.2+ (Patterson). Dentrix Imaging lists dozens of devices (Dentrix Help).

Which guide you need: this page answers whether one sensor works with your practice software. For a device reference across Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Open Dental, see imaging device compatibility. For the driver or bridge setup, see sensor TWAIN drivers and PMS bridges.

Why "compatible" is more complicated than yes or no

A sensor reaches your chart in one of three ways:

  1. Direct integration. The PMS imaging module talks to the sensor's driver itself. Dentrix calls this a supported "acquisition device" (Dentrix Help).
  2. TWAIN driver. A generic imaging interface. Dentrix warns that some, but not all, devices have been tested over TWAIN, and that TWAIN with certain devices "might have unexpected results" (Dentrix Help).
  3. Bridge to separate imaging software. The sensor works with its own imaging program, such as DEXIS, Sidexis, Romexis or VixWin, and the PMS launches it from the patient's chart. Open Dental works largely this way (Open Dental).

So the real question has four parts: which sensor model, which driver version, which PMS version, and which Windows version. A sensor that worked last year can stop working after an upgrade, as the Schick and Eaglesoft example below shows.

Which sensors does Dentrix support?

Dentrix Imaging publishes a long device list. Intraoral examples include:

  • DEXIS Platinum and Titanium
  • Dentsply Sirona XIOS AE Select, XG Select and XG Supreme
  • Schick 33, Schick AE and Schick Elite
  • Gendex GXS-700
  • Kodak/Carestream RVG 5000 and 6000 series
  • Midmark Progeny ClearVision
  • Planmeca ProSensor and ProSensor HD (via DIDAPI)
  • Vatech HD sensor (via TWAIN or the EzDent-i bridge)

(Dentrix Help)

Many low-cost sensors are rebranded Teledyne e2v or Hamamatsu hardware and are supported under that name. For example, Dentrix says LED Dental Tuxedo sensors can be either Hamamatsu or e2v devices depending on when they were made, and tells you to check with LED Dental (Dentrix Help).

Two cautions from the same page:

  • Some older sensors, such as Schick CDR 2000 and Schick HS, "may function" only on Windows 7 and are not officially supported.
  • Devices other than DEXIS may require extra costs, such as driver purchases. Dentrix tells you to check with the device manufacturer before buying.

(Dentrix Help)

Which sensors does Eaglesoft support?

For Eaglesoft 24.2 and above, Patterson lists these integrated intraoral X-ray devices (Patterson 2647):

  • Schick CDR Elite, Schick 33, Schick AE
  • Planmeca ProSensor
  • Sirona Xios, Xios Plus
  • Instrumentarium Snapshot
  • Progeny ClearVision
  • Gendex GXS-700
  • DEXIS Platinum and Titanium (via Gendex GxPicture)

Patterson adds that previously supported equipment that has been sunset or discontinued by the manufacturer is no longer tested with current Patterson software (Patterson 2647). Carestream RVG sensors are not on that list. That doesn't prove they can't work, but you'd need confirmation from Patterson or Carestream before relying on it.

The Schick and Eaglesoft 24.20 change

Patterson's Schick compatibility article (Rev007, updated February 20, 2026) is a good example of why versions matter (Patterson 44369):

  • Schick 33, AE and Elite sensors require IOSS integration on Eaglesoft 24.20 and later.
  • Patterson lists Schick WIFI, PlusWire, CDR and Wireless sensors as not supported on 24.20+.
  • Schick AE service ends July 1, 2026.
  • Dentsply Sirona ended CDR DICOM support on December 31, 2024.
  • Schick over Terminal Services is no longer available as of 24.20.

If you run Schick sensors on Eaglesoft, check that article before upgrading.

Which imaging software does Open Dental bridge to?

Open Dental doesn't publish a sensor list. It publishes program bridges to imaging software. They include:

  • Dexis, Carestream and DTX Studio
  • Sirona SIDEXIS XG and Schick CDR Dicom
  • Planmeca (via Dimaxis) and Romexis
  • Apteryx
  • VixWin, which Gendex uses
  • Progeny
  • EzDent-i
  • Trophy

(Open Dental)

So in Open Dental, the question becomes: does my sensor work with one of those imaging programs, and does that program's bridge support my version? Open Dental also recommends a BAA with the third-party program's vendor before enabling a bridge, because many of them store PHI (Open Dental).

What about cloud PMS like Curve?

Cloud systems still need a local capture component, because the sensor plugs into a PC in the operatory. Curve notes that Curve Capture is not supported on terminal servers (including RDP or Citrix) because it needs direct local access to imaging devices, that ARM-based Surface Pro devices may have driver install issues, and that Schick/IOSS imaging drivers require an Intel or AMD (x86/x64) processor (Curve). That matters if you're considering ARM-based laptops. For the broader trade-off, see server vs. cloud.

How do I check my own setup?

  1. Get the exact model. Check the label on the sensor's USB module or the device manager entry. "Schick" alone isn't enough, and neither is "Tuxedo."
  2. Get your PMS version from Help > About.
  3. Check the vendor list: the Dentrix supported devices page, Patterson 2647 and 44369, or Open Dental's bridge list.
  4. Check the driver against your Windows version. Henry Schein One says it will no longer support installing Dentrix on Windows 10 after June 30, 2026 (Dentrix system requirements).
  5. Get it in writing from the vendor before you buy a sensor or upgrade the PMS.
  6. Test one operatory before rolling it out office-wide.

To see this on your own floor plan, FloorStack Studio (live, free plan) builds a 3D IT plan of your office with every device placed.

Before you buy imaging or clinical devices, the free device compatibility checker (coming soon) is planned to check sensors, CBCT, pano and PMS bridges; always confirm against vendor documentation.

To keep this as a living record, the free equipment inventory & appraisal report (coming soon) is planned to track devices, serials, warranties and values in one report.

How FloorStack helps

FloorStack runs a compatibility check before you add a scanner, PC or software to your plan, so you can catch conflicts before you buy (FloorStack). The free Compatibility Checker tool (planned; coming soon) is meant to bring that check to a public page. Results should still be confirmed against vendor documentation like the lists above. It's part of the FloorStack dental build-out platform. See the Compatibility Checker or the Dental Equipment Inventory hub.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dentrix work with Carestream sensors?

Dentrix Imaging lists Kodak/Carestream RVG 5000 and 6000 series as supported, directly or via TWAIN (Dentrix Help). Check other RVG models with Dentrix.

Does Eaglesoft work with DEXIS sensors?

Patterson lists DEXIS Platinum and Titanium as integrated with Eaglesoft 24.2+ via Gendex GxPicture (Patterson 2647).

Will my Schick sensor work after I upgrade Eaglesoft?

Schick 33, AE and Elite need IOSS integration on 24.20+, while Schick WIFI, PlusWire, CDR and Wireless are listed as unsupported (Patterson 44369).

Can I use any sensor with a TWAIN driver?

Not reliably. Dentrix says only some devices have been tested over TWAIN, and results may be unexpected (Dentrix Help).

Do I need a BAA with my imaging software vendor?

Open Dental recommends one before enabling any third-party bridge, since many store PHI (Open Dental). See HIPAA for dental IT.

Do sensors work over a terminal server or remote desktop?

Often not. Curve Capture isn't supported on terminal servers (Curve), and Patterson ended Schick over Terminal Services in Eaglesoft 24.20 (Patterson 44369).
